The Fire Pit That Changed Everything

Every outdoor gathering has the same problem: someone ends up downwind, eyes watering, jacket reeking of smoke for the next three days. We built the Ember 19″ to fix that. Its double-wall convection system pulls fresh air through the bottom, superheats it between the inner and outer walls, and jets it back over the flames through precision-drilled holes at the top rim. The result is a secondary combustion that burns smoke particles before they ever reach you.

This isn’t a marketing gimmick or a fan-powered workaround. It’s passive airflow physics — no batteries, no moving parts, nothing to break. Light a fire, wait 15 minutes for the walls to heat up, and watch the smoke virtually disappear. What’s left is a tall, bright column of clean flame that you can sit around in a white shirt without thinking twice.

How Smokeless Technology Actually Works

Most fire pits are a single-wall bowl. Air enters from the top (where you don’t want it) and smoke rises freely. The Ember uses a different approach:

  1. Cold air enters through bottom vents — drawn in naturally by the fire’s updraft. This feeds oxygen to the base of the fire where it’s needed most.
  2. Air travels up between the double walls — the gap between inner and outer walls acts as a heat exchanger. By the time air reaches the top, it’s superheated to over 1,000°F.
  3. Superheated air jets from top rim holes — this wall of hot air meets rising smoke and combustion gases, igniting them in a secondary burn. Smoke particles combust instead of floating into your neighbor’s yard.

The entire system is passive — no fans, no electricity, no batteries to die mid-evening. Once the stainless steel walls reach operating temperature (about 10–15 minutes), the secondary burn kicks in automatically and sustains itself as long as there’s fuel in the pit.

Why 304 Stainless Steel Matters

Cheap fire pits use cold-rolled steel or thin-gauge 430 stainless that rusts within a season. We use 304-grade stainless steel — the same alloy used in commercial kitchen equipment, marine hardware, and brewing tanks. Here’s why it matters:

  • Corrosion resistance. 304 stainless contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel, forming a passive oxide layer that prevents rust even when left outdoors in rain, snow, and coastal salt air.
  • Heat tolerance. Maintains structural integrity at sustained temperatures up to 1,500°F — well above what any wood or charcoal fire produces.
  • No paint to peel. The natural brushed finish is the finish. No coatings to flake, no paint to burn off and release fumes during your first fire.
  • Easy to clean. Stainless steel doesn’t absorb grease or soot. A damp cloth wipes the exterior clean. The interior develops a natural patina over time that doesn’t affect performance.

Sized for Real Gatherings

At 19 inches diameter, the Ember hits the sweet spot for most backyard and camping situations: big enough to generate serious warmth for 4–6 people in a circle, compact enough to fit in a truck bed or SUV cargo area. If you regularly host larger groups (8+), check out the Ember XL 27″.

  • Backyard patios — Fits on most standard patio surfaces. Use on a heat pad or non-combustible surface to protect your deck.
  • Car camping — 18 lbs is easy to load. The included carry bag protects your vehicle interior from ash residue.
  • Overlanding — Straps to a roof rack or slides behind a seat. Compact footprint for sites where ground fires aren’t permitted.
  • Tailgating & beach bonfires — Contained fire, no flying embers, minimal smoke means fewer complaints from neighbors and park rangers.

Add the Grill Grate Pro to turn your Ember into a cooking station, or grab the Fire Pit Accessory Kit for a poker, tongs, and heat-resistant gloves.

Getting the Best Burn

Pro Tip: The smokeless effect depends on dry wood. Freshly cut or “green” wood has 40–60% moisture content and will smoke regardless of the fire pit design. Use kiln-dried hardwood or wood that’s been air-dried at least 6 months (under 20% moisture). Hardwoods like oak, maple, and hickory burn longest and produce the least smoke.

  • Starting the fire: Use a small amount of kindling or a fire starter at the bottom. Avoid lighter fluid — it leaves a chemical taste and isn’t necessary with good airflow design. Build up with progressively larger pieces as the fire establishes.
  • Maintaining smokeless mode: Once the walls are hot (10–15 min), add wood gradually. Don’t overload the pit — too much fuel at once smothers the primary airflow and temporarily produces smoke until the fire catches up.
  • Ash management: The removable ash pan slides out for easy dumping. Let ash cool completely before disposal. A thin layer of ash on the bottom actually insulates the pan and improves the next fire’s startup.
  • Cleaning: Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth. The interior is self-cleaning — regular fires burn off any residue. Once or twice a season, empty all ash and check the bottom air vents for blockage.
  • Storage: Store in the included carry bag. If leaving outdoors, a fitted cover (sold separately) extends the finish life, though 304 stainless handles weather exposure well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this fire pit truly smokeless?

During the startup phase (first 10–15 minutes), you’ll see some smoke as the walls heat up. Once the double-wall system reaches operating temperature, smoke drops by roughly 95%. You may see brief puffs when adding new wood, which is normal. The key factor is fuel — dry, seasoned hardwood produces dramatically less smoke than softwood or damp wood.

What kind of wood should I use?

Kiln-dried hardwood gives the best results: oak, maple, hickory, cherry, or birch. Avoid softwoods like pine, cedar, or spruce — they contain more resin, produce more smoke, and create more sparks. Wood should be split to 3–4″ diameter pieces for optimal airflow. Never burn treated lumber, painted wood, or plywood.

Can I cook on this fire pit?

Not directly — the Ember is designed as a warmth and ambiance fire pit. To cook over it, add our Grill Grate Pro ($39.99), which sits on the rim and provides an adjustable-height cooking surface. Alternatively, you can roast marshmallows and hot dogs with the Roasting Fork Set.

Can I use this on a wood deck?

We recommend placing the Ember on a non-combustible surface — concrete, pavers, brick, or a heat-resistant fire pit pad. Wood decks, composite decking, and dry grass can be damaged by radiant heat from the base. If your only option is a deck, use a heat deflector pad rated for fire pit use (at least 2″ thick).

How long does a fire last?

A full load of hardwood burns 4–6 hours at a moderate burn rate. Smaller pieces burn faster but produce more heat. For a long evening fire, start with kindling, build up to larger splits, and add 2–3 pieces every 45 minutes to maintain consistent flames.

Will it rust if I leave it outside?

304 stainless steel is highly corrosion-resistant — it’s the same grade used in marine hardware. You can leave the Ember outdoors year-round without structural rust issues. Over time, you may see minor surface discoloration from heat cycling, which is purely cosmetic. A fitted cover helps keep the interior clean between uses.

How does the 19″ compare to the 27″ XL?

The 19″ seats 4–6 people and weighs 18 lbs — ideal for couples, small families, and anyone who wants to take it camping. The 27″ XL seats 8–10, weighs 32 lbs, and is better suited for permanent backyard installations and larger gatherings. Both use the same smokeless technology.
