Big Fire, No Smoke

The Ember 19″ is our best-seller for a reason — but some gatherings need more. More flame, more warmth, more seats around the circle. The Ember XL 27″ takes everything that works about the 19″ and scales it up for serious entertaining: bigger fire chamber, taller flames, and a heat radius that keeps 8–12 people warm without anyone scooting their chair closer.

The physics are identical. Double-wall construction pulls cold air through the base, superheats it between the walls, and jets it through precision-drilled holes at the rim. The result is a secondary burn that eliminates up to 95% of smoke. The XL just does it at a larger scale — bigger airflow channels, more secondary burn holes, and a deeper fire bowl that holds more fuel for longer unattended burn times.

When to Choose the XL Over the 19″

The Ember 19″ is the right choice for couples, small families, and anyone who wants portability (18 lbs). The XL is for a different use case:

  • Regular hosting. If you entertain groups of 6+ on your patio or backyard, the 19″ leaves people on the outer edge cold. The XL’s heat radius covers a wider circle.
  • Permanent installation. At 32 lbs, the XL isn’t something you’re loading into the truck every weekend. It’s designed to sit on your patio as a centerpiece — a fixture you build your outdoor space around.
  • Longer burns. The deeper fire bowl holds more fuel. A full load of hardwood burns 5–7 hours without adding more — enough for an entire evening without tending the fire.
  • Bigger flames. More fuel and more air means taller, more dramatic flames. This is the fire pit people photograph.

Same Smokeless Technology, Larger Scale

The XL uses the same double-wall convection system as the 19″. Cold air enters through bottom vents, travels up through the gap between walls, and exits as superheated jets through the rim holes. These jets ignite rising smoke and combustion gases in a secondary burn. The result: tall, clean flames with virtually no smoke once the walls reach operating temperature (12–18 minutes for the larger body).

The system is fully passive — no fans, no power, no moving parts. Just stainless steel and physics.

304 Stainless Steel Construction

Same marine-grade 304 stainless steel as the 19″ — 18% chromium, 8% nickel, 1.5mm wall thickness. Won’t rust, won’t peel, won’t corrode in rain, snow, or coastal salt air. The natural brushed finish is the final finish. Add the Grill Grate Pro for a cooking surface that sits directly on the XL’s rim.

Care & Best Practices

Pro Tip: The XL’s larger fire bowl benefits from a bed of lava rock or fire glass on the bottom. A 2″ layer insulates the ash pan, reflects heat upward, and helps the fire reach smokeless temperature faster. Optional — the pit works fine without it — but it’s a noticeable improvement.

  • Fuel: Use kiln-dried hardwood or seasoned splits under 20% moisture. Oak, hickory, and maple burn longest. Avoid softwood — pine and cedar produce excess smoke and sparks.
  • Starting: Kindling and fire starters at the bottom, medium splits on top. No lighter fluid needed — the bottom vents provide strong natural draft.
  • Ash removal: Let ash cool completely, then lift out the removable ash pan. A 1″ ash bed on the bottom is fine between cleanings — it insulates the base.
  • Surface care: Wipe exterior with a damp cloth. Heat discoloration is normal and cosmetic. For a deeper clean, Bar Keeper’s Friend restores the original brushed finish.
  • Weather: Safe to leave outdoors year-round. A fitted cover (sold separately) keeps the interior clean between uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the XL compare to the 19″?

The 19″ seats 4–6, weighs 18 lbs, and is portable enough for camping. The XL seats 8–12, weighs 32 lbs, and is designed for permanent or semi-permanent backyard use. Both use identical smokeless technology and 304 stainless steel. Choose the 19″ for portability, the XL for entertaining.

Can I cook on the XL?

Add our Grill Grate Pro ($39.99) for a full cooking surface. The grate’s adjustable legs fit fire pits up to 30″ — the 27″ XL is within range. For casual roasting, the Roasting Fork Set works great with the XL’s taller flame column.

Is 32 lbs too heavy to move?

The XL has integrated carry handles on both sides. Two people can move it easily. It’s not designed for weekly transport to campsites — that’s what the 19″ or Spark 15″ are for. The XL is meant to stay in your outdoor space and be occasionally repositioned.

What surface should I put it on?

Concrete, pavers, brick, or a fire pit pad rated for high heat. Not directly on wood decks, composite decking, or dry grass. The larger fire bowl generates more radiant heat at the base than the 19″ — a heat deflector pad is strongly recommended for any combustible surface.

Will it rust outside?

304 stainless steel is highly corrosion-resistant. Rain, snow, humidity — none of it causes structural rust. You may see cosmetic heat discoloration (golden or blue tinting) after heavy use, which is normal and doesn’t affect performance or durability.
