From Fire Pit to Grill in Seconds

You bought a fire pit for ambiance. Now you’re staring at a bed of perfect cooking coals and wishing you could throw a steak on them. The Grill Grate Pro is that missing piece — a heavy-duty stainless steel cooking surface that drops onto your fire pit rim in seconds and turns open flames into a working grill.

Unlike flimsy grill grates that warp after a few fires, this one is built from 6mm 304 stainless steel rod — the same material we use in our Ember fire pits. It sits flat, stays flat, and handles direct flame contact without distortion season after season.

Why This Grate Works When Others Don’t

We’ve tested over a dozen fire pit grill grates from competitors. Here’s what most of them get wrong, and how we fixed it:

  • Warping. Thin-gauge steel expands unevenly under direct fire, creating a wobble that gets worse with every use. The Grill Grate Pro uses 6mm rod — three times thicker than most competitors. It stays dimensionally stable across hundreds of heating cycles.
  • No height adjustment. Temperature control over a fire pit means controlling distance from the coals. Fixed-height grates give you one option: whatever you get. Ours offers three positions — 4″, 6″, and 8″ above the flame — so you can sear at high heat or slow-cook at lower temperatures.
  • Can’t add wood. The number-one complaint about fire pit cooking grates: once the grate is loaded with food, you can’t feed the fire without pulling everything off. Our hinged access door swings open on one side, letting you add wood or adjust coals while your food stays in place.
  • Limited compatibility. Many grill grates are designed for one specific fire pit model. The Grill Grate Pro’s adjustable support legs fit any round fire pit between 15″ and 30″ diameter — our Ember 19″, Ember XL 27″, or most other brands.

What You Can Cook

Anything you’d put on a regular grill — and a few things you wouldn’t:

  • Direct grilling (4″ height): Steaks, burgers, chicken thighs, sausages, shrimp skewers. The 18″ × 18″ surface handles food for 4–6 people.
  • Moderate heat (6″ height): Bone-in chicken, pork chops, thick-cut vegetables, corn on the cob. Slower cook with less char.
  • Low and slow (8″ height): Whole fish, delicate vegetables, warming bread, melting cheese. Also the right height for using a cast iron skillet or Dutch oven on top of the grate.
  • With cast iron: Set a skillet, griddle, or Dutch oven directly on the grate for campfire cooking beyond direct grilling — stir fry, pan sauces, fajitas, breakfast plates.

Built-In Convenience

  • Hinged access door: Swing open the left section to add wood, rearrange coals, or stoke the fire without disturbing your food. Closes flush when not in use.
  • Pre-seasoned surface: Arrives with an oil coating ready for first use. Season builds up over time just like cast iron — no break-in period required.
  • Cleaning brush included: A stainless steel bristle brush is included in the box. Clean while the grate is still warm for easiest results. The grate is also dishwasher safe for deeper cleaning.
  • Compact storage: The support legs detach for flat storage. The grate itself is 18″ × 18″ and stores vertically against a wall or flat on a shelf.

Care & Maintenance

Pro Tip: After cooking, close the hinged door and let the fire burn hot for 5 minutes. This carbonizes food residue and makes it easy to brush off — same technique restaurants use on flat-top grills. A quick brush while warm beats a hard scrub after the grate cools.

  • After each use: Brush with the included stainless brush while still warm. For stuck-on food, a ball of aluminum foil works as a scrubber.
  • Deep cleaning: The grate is dishwasher safe. For heavy buildup, soak in hot soapy water for 30 minutes, then scrub and rinse. Re-apply a light coat of cooking oil afterward.
  • Seasoning: The pre-seasoned coating improves with use. To accelerate buildup, rub with a thin layer of vegetable oil after cleaning and heat over the fire for 10 minutes. The surface develops a natural patina similar to cast iron.
  • Storage: Store dry in a garage, shed, or carry bag. If leaving on the fire pit outdoors, 304 stainless handles weather exposure well, but a cover keeps the cooking surface cleaner between uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this fit my fire pit?

The Grill Grate Pro fits any round or square fire pit between 15″ and 30″ in diameter. The adjustable support legs sit on the fire pit rim (wall must be at least 1″ wide). It’s designed to pair perfectly with our Ember 19″ and Ember XL 27″, but works with most major brands including Solo Stove, Breeo, and BioLite.

Can I use charcoal instead of wood?

Yes. The grate works with any fuel your fire pit accepts — hardwood, charcoal briquettes, lump charcoal, or wood pellets. Charcoal produces more consistent heat with less flame, which many people prefer for cooking. Use the 4″ height setting with charcoal for best searing results.

How much weight can it hold?

The grate handles 40+ lbs of distributed weight — more than enough for a loaded Dutch oven, multiple steaks, and a cast iron skillet simultaneously. The 6mm stainless steel rod construction doesn’t flex under load like thinner wire grates.

Is this just for fire pits, or can I use it on a campfire?

Both. At campsites with fire rings, the support legs sit on the ring wall. For ground campfires without a ring, you can set the grate on rocks or bricks at the desired height. The main requirement is a stable, level surface for the support legs.

Does food stick to the grate?

The pre-seasoned surface reduces sticking, but some food (especially lean fish and chicken breast) may stick on any grate. Two tips: oil the food, not the grate — a light coat of high-smoke-point oil (avocado, grapeseed) on the food prevents most sticking. And let the grate heat for 5 minutes before placing food — cold metal sticks, hot metal sears and releases.
