Campfire Cooking, Perfected

There’s a reason cast iron has been the outdoor cook’s material of choice for over 200 years. It holds heat like nothing else, develops a natural non-stick surface over time, and — when treated right — outlasts every other piece of gear in your kit. The problem? Most cast iron sets sold online are either low-grade imports that crack on their first campfire, or overpriced heritage brands that charge a premium for a name.

We built the NatureStove Cast Iron Cookware Set to sit right in the middle: foundry-quality iron at a price that doesn’t punish you for cooking outdoors. Every piece is pre-seasoned with flaxseed oil at our partner foundry, inspected for even wall thickness, and shipped in a padded carry case that actually protects your investment on rough forest roads.

What’s in the Set

  • 10″ Skillet — 2″ depth with dual pour spouts. The workhorse for steaks, eggs, cornbread, pan sauces, and anything you’d throw in a frying pan at home. The long handle stays cool enough to grab with a leather glove at campfire temperatures.
  • 4-Quart Dutch Oven — Flanged lid designed to hold charcoal briquettes on top for even baking. Stews, chili, sourdough bread, cobblers — this is where slow-cooked camp meals happen. The bail handle locks upright for hanging over a fire or tripod.
  • 12″ × 12″ Griddle Plate — Flat surface with raised edges to contain grease. Smash burgers, bacon, grilled vegetables, pancakes. Sits stable on any fire pit grate or camp stove burner.
  • Lid Lifter Tool — 14″ forged steel hook for safely lifting hot Dutch oven lids loaded with coals. The one tool you never think to bring until you need it.
  • Padded Carry Case — Individual compartments prevent pieces from scratching each other. Reinforced handles and a water-resistant base for truck beds and muddy campsites.

Why This Set — Not That One

We’ve seen too many “cast iron camping sets” that are just repackaged kitchen cookware with a bag thrown in. Here’s what makes this different:

  • Consistent wall thickness. Cheap cast iron has thin spots that create hot zones and cold spots. Every NatureStove piece is poured from the same mold batch and checked with calipers before seasoning. You get even heat across the entire cooking surface.
  • Machine-smoothed interior. Modern mass-market cast iron skips the polishing step to save cost, leaving you with a rough, pebbly surface that food sticks to until you’ve built up months of seasoning. We smooth-finish every piece before the first oil coat goes on.
  • Flanged Dutch oven lid. Most camp Dutch ovens have flat lids. Ours has a raised rim that holds charcoal briquettes in place — critical for baking bread, cinnamon rolls, or anything that needs top heat. The lid also fits the skillet for covered cooking.
  • A case that’s actually useful. Not a flimsy drawstring bag. The included carry case has rigid dividers, padded walls, and a reinforced bottom. Your cookware won’t rattle around in your truck or scratch your wood stove‘s cooktop.

Built for Real Conditions

We test every product in the conditions our customers actually use them. This set has been through:

  • Backyard fire pit cookouts — Saturday dinners on the patio, Sunday morning pancakes over the coals
  • Car camping & base camp — Week-long trips where the Dutch oven runs breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Overlanding & truck camping — Rough roads, tight storage, cooking at elevation with unpredictable wind
  • Home kitchen — Stovetop, oven (up to 500°F), even broiler-safe. A good cast iron set doesn’t stay in the garage

Pair this set with the Grill Grate Pro for a stable cooking surface over any fire pit, or add the Roasting Fork Set for campfire marshmallows and hot dogs after the main course.

Care & Seasoning Guide

Cast iron is low-maintenance, but the first few uses set the tone for years of performance. Here’s what we recommend:

Pro Tip: Your set arrives pre-seasoned and ready to cook. But if you want to accelerate the non-stick buildup, cook bacon or fatty meats for your first 3–4 uses. The rendered fat bonds to the iron and builds seasoning faster than any oil-and-oven method.

  • After cooking: Scrape food residue with a stiff brush or chain-mail scrubber while the pan is still warm. A little hot water is fine — just don’t soak it or run it through the dishwasher.
  • Dry immediately. Water left on cast iron causes rust. Towel dry, then set on a burner or over the fire for 30 seconds to evaporate any remaining moisture.
  • Light oil coat: While the pan is still warm, rub a thin layer of cooking oil (vegetable, canola, or flaxseed) over the entire surface. Wipe off the excess with a paper towel — you want a sheen, not a puddle.
  • Storage: Store in the carry case with a paper towel between stacked pieces. In humid climates, add a silica gel packet to the case.
  • Rust recovery: If rust appears, scrub with steel wool, rinse, dry thoroughly, and re-season in a 450°F oven with a thin coat of flaxseed oil for one hour. One session usually restores the surface completely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this set pre-seasoned? Can I cook on it immediately?

Yes. Every piece comes with three coats of flaxseed oil seasoning applied at the foundry. You can cook on it right out of the box — no oven seasoning ritual required. That said, the seasoning will improve with every use, especially with fatty foods like bacon, sausage, and butter-based recipes.

Can I use this on a gas or charcoal grill?

Absolutely. The skillet and griddle sit flat on any grill grate. The Dutch oven works best with charcoal (place briquettes on the flanged lid for top heat). All pieces are safe for gas grills, charcoal grills, campfires, fire pits, propane camp stoves, and home ovens up to 500°F.

How heavy is the full set? Is it practical for camping?

Total weight is 18 lbs (8.2 kg) with the carry case. That’s realistic for car camping, overlanding, and base camp cooking — not ultralight backpacking. If you’re hiking in, check out our lighter single-piece options. For drive-up campsites and truck beds, this set is standard gear.

Does the Dutch oven lid fit the skillet?

Yes. The Dutch oven lid doubles as a cover for the 10″ skillet. This is useful for steaming vegetables, melting cheese on burgers, or keeping food warm while other dishes finish cooking.

What if a piece cracks or breaks?

Cast iron should never crack under normal use. If it does, our lifetime warranty covers it — we’ll replace the piece, no questions asked. The most common cause of cracking is rapid temperature change (cold water on a screaming-hot pan), which our care guide helps you avoid.

Can I use soap on cast iron?

Modern dish soap is fine in small amounts. The old advice about “never using soap” dates back to when soap contained lye, which stripped seasoning. Today’s dish soap is gentle enough that it won’t damage a well-seasoned surface. Just don’t soak the pan or leave it wet.

What’s the difference between this and a kitchen cast iron set?

Three things: the Dutch oven has a flanged lid for holding coals (kitchen Dutch ovens have dome lids), the carry case is built for transport over rough roads, and the lid lifter is an outdoor-specific tool. You can use this in your home kitchen — many of our customers do — but it’s designed for open-fire cooking first.
